How can I travel from Hobart to Cradle Mountain?

Tasmania is located 150 miles off the south coast of mainland Australia. The easiest way to get there is via Hobart, the Tassie capital. You can fly direct to Hobart from most major cities in Australia including Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. You could also fly to Launceston which is closer to the national park, but you may find there are fewer flight options than Hobart.

From Hobart, you can either hire a car and drive to Cradle MountainĀ or jump on a local bus.

Self-driving

It takes about 4.5 hours (in normal traffic) from Hobart to Cradle Mountain via the Midland and Bass highways. The route is fairly easy to navigate thanks, but some areas are quite windy so be mindful when you're driving. Take extra care when driving between dusk and dawn as this is when wildlife is most active.

Driving is a great way to see Tasmania's beautiful natural scenery. You can also take your time and stop at any interesting landmarks or towns along the way.

Public transport

There is no direct bus from Hobart to Cradle Mountain. However, you can take a local bus from the Hobart Transit Centre to Cornwall Square Transit Centre in Launceston which takes about 3 hours.

From Launceston, there are a few private bus companies that offer daily services up to Cradle Mountain. The total travel time is about 6 hours.
