6 amazing new trips for families only

written by Heather Kang November 29, 2023

The newest additions to Intrepid’s family range pack heaps of adventure into some serious quality time together.

A family trip without the logistical Tetris that goes into pulling it off sounds like a long shot, but with Intrepid’s family trips you pretty much just need to book your flights, pack your bags and show up. The newest additions to the Family range take care of the rest while dishing up some perfectly curated experiences in incredible pockets of the planet: South Korea, Japan, Costa Rica, Croatia, Finland and the USA. Hop in, kids.

1. South Korea Family Holiday

On a South Korea adventure from tip to tail and back again, you and the kids will run the gamut of culture, history and fun times this country offers. With the new South Korea Family Holiday, kids can live a day in the life of a monk inside a Buddhist temple and try some meditative martial arts on for size. Visit the Korean demilitarized zone near the border with North Korea and get a kid-friendly history lesson that’ll put textbooks to shame. Learn how to make kimbap and kimchi and then hit the beach in Busan on the south-east coast. You’ll even spend two nights in a hanok – a traditional Korean house with floor beds.

2. Croatia Family Holiday

Spend some family time on the sea on the new Croatia Family Holiday. From your starting point in Dubrovnik (better known as King’s Landing from Game of Thrones to some), you’ll head out onto the Adriatic Sea for an island hopper of an adventure. On Lastovo, visit the island’s oldest family farm for a home-cooked meal. Next, you’ll hit the water with a local nature expert to brush up on both furry and leafy friends with time for swimming and a picnic included. Then head to a high point to see the skies at night with an astronomer in tow. On Korcula, learn how to make Croatian makaruni at a restaurant in one of the island’s oldest settlements.

3. Best of Costa Rica Family Holiday

This new best-of edition gives families a deeper dive into Costa Rica than the 10-day Costa Rica Family Holiday with an additional four days tacked on and stops in Sarapiqui and the boat-access-only Tortuguero. In Tortuguero National Park, you’ll hop on a boat tour of the park’s canals and get the chance to spot jaguars, turtles, birds and more. In Sarapiqui, you’ll head out on a night walk in the rainforest – home to sloths, howler monkeys, snakes and frogs. You’ll also get the chance to spend time with the indigenous Terraba community (and learn about how they make chocolate).

4. Japan Highlights Family Holiday

Take the kids on a train journey from Tokyo to Osaka on the new Japan Highlights Family Holiday, featuring tonnes of opportunities for them to try new things. Make your own sushi. Get whappy in a taiko drumming class. Spend a night in a farm stay on a tea farm and get involved in harvesting some crops and prepping a home-cooked meal. There’s plenty of free time woven into the trip, too, with no shortage of optional activities, like dressing up like a family of samurais and touring a samurai museum.

5. Finnish Lapland Winter Family Holiday

Not all holidays need to be about sunshine and beaches. Intrepid’s brand new Finnish Lapland Winter Family Holiday bundles your crew up in a true winter wonderland. The five-day trip kicks off in Rovaniemi with a visit to Santa’s Village for a chance to meet the big guy himself and cross into the Arctic Circle. Then, head into Hossa National Park for three nights at Camp Norwide, an eco-lodge that will serve as your home base to wintery adventures including dog sledding and igloo building.

6. Western USA Family Holiday

This family-focused take on a classic American road trip was built for families and tied together with kid-friendly accommodations and dining options. Visit a ghost town and then become a junior ranger in Zion National Park with easy walks to epic waterfalls and lakes. In Monument Valley, head out on a 4WD tour with a Navajo guide and spend the night in a hogan – a traditional Najavo hut built out of logs and red earth. Along the way you’ll get pit stops at the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend and Bryce Canyon.
